Our Community
What makes a community special? In our county it’s a combination of natural and community resources and warm, caring people.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the scenery ranges from spectacular views from Pinnacle Mountain at 5,665 feet elevation to the Linville Gorge area, known as the Grand Canyon of the East. Linville Caverns is a major attraction and natural wonder. The Blue Ridge Parkway winds through our county, and 6,500 acre Lake James offers breathtaking scenery, clear cool water, and great fishing and boating. Other outdoor activities include gem mining, hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and camping.
All this natural beauty creates a sense of peace and relaxation. In fact our hospital is surrounded by forests and mountains, an environment that is conducive to healing.
Several small towns offer a variety of things to do. Our hospital is located in Marion, the county seat. Marion includes a community college, several business-friendly associations, a small manufacturing base, and plenty of restaurants, arts & crafts, and festivals throughout the year. Marion includes a community health department, and vibrant Chamber and Tourism organizations.
Neighboring town Old Fort includes two quaint museums, a geyser, several annual festivals including free year round Mountain Music jam sessions, and small businesses, restaurants, and specialty shops. Little Switzerland is a small community in the most mountainous section of the county offering excellent lodging and Appalachian culture. The towns of Nebo, Glenwood, and the North Cove community offer special charms and close community ties.
You simply won’t find nicer people than those in our county. They are warm and welcoming, and glad to help visitors. Many of our families have been here for generations; they are steeped in our mountain culture of independence, helping their neighbors and getting things done.
