McDowell Hospital Implements New Electronic Medical Record

On October 1st 2011, McDowell Hospital implemented Cerner Software, an electronic medical record system, to enhance the safety and quality of patient care for local community.

As part of their mission to provide quality care to all, McDowell Hospital, a member of Mission Health, implemented a new electronic medical record called Cerner last week. This conversion to a new software system means that patients can expect faster reporting, improved communication among their health team and better care due to built-in alert systems and increased physician access to patient records.
“Having Cerner software, hospital-wide, in a facility this size is almost unheard of. Normally, it’s the larger hospitals that have this software,” states Sonya Greck, Interim CEO of McDowell Hospital. “We are grateful that our affiliation with Mission Health allows us the technology needed to provide the same type of quality care here in our own community that you can find at Mission.”
In addition to the numerous quality improvements that Cerner will provide to patient care, this software is nationally demonstrated to reduce errors, through components like the built-in alerts. This means that as a physician or healthcare provider is inputting information into the patient’s chart, the computer will recognize if there are any specific allergies the patient may have. It will also inform the physician if a patient is on any medications that might interfere with current treatment.
“I personally am very excited that we are implementing Cerner” said Dr. Neal T. Ginn, Obstetrician/Gynecologist at McDowell OB/Gyn. “Cerner is time-tested and functional; this will create more integration within the Mission Health System, and will offer McDowell a better use of healthcare information. Now, the affiliates will be able to share information which enhances our ability to provide quality care across our health system.”
The implementation of Cerner is centered on providing high quality care to patients, and one outcome is a seamless continuum of care for patients throughout Mission Health System.
