Laboratory

From wellness testing to routine patient procedures or the rapid results required in an emergency situation, lab services play a critical role in your healthcare. Our on-site lab is always ready to support your physician by providing the information needed to make an accurate diagnosis.

The Laboratory Department at McDowell Hospital is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), which oversees quality of services through routine inspections. The lab team maintains the integrity of all test specimens and confidentially delivers timely results. Our lab meets the medical needs of inpatients at McDowell Hospital and also offers outpatient services for anyone in the community.

Our Services

The laboratory is located on-site and is available 24/7 for inpatient and Emergency Department testing. We perform the complete range of services physicians need to diagnose illnesses and disease, evaluate tissue biopsies, assess blood chemistry, determine blood type, manage transfusions and monitor the effectiveness of therapies or medications. When a rare or highly specialized test is necessary, our affiliation with Mission Health System ensures the quick and safe transfer of specimens to the Mission Hospital Laboratory.

Outpatient Services

The lab serves the McDowell community with an outpatient clinic offering convenient and extended hours. Outpatient services include:

• Chemistry and Hematology Blood testing
• Throat culture, Wound culture, Urine culture, etc.
• Urinalysis
• Drug testing

We are also a DNA collection site if you would like DNA testing performed; we work through two companies – DNA Diagnostics and DDC.  Please call our office if you would like more information concerning DNA testing.

Preparing for Lab Tests

Some lab tests require advance preparation, such as fasting or limiting water intake. If you have any questions regarding your procedure, please call and we will give you the instructions to follow. 

Outpatient Appointments and Hours:

Please call 828-659-5140 to schedule an appointment for Drug Testing or Glucose Tolerance Testing. For all other testing, we are a walk-in laboratory.  We’re open:

Monday through Friday: 7:00 am to 7:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Our Team

Precise laboratory testing at McDowell Hospital is accomplished though a team of well-educated and certified physicians and lab technicians with experience conducting chemical, biological, hematological, microscopic and bacteriological tests. Our qualifications include:

• Board Certified Pathologist
• Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology
• Certified Medical Technologist

Student Programs
