McDowell Hospital Offers Free Running Clinics
Posted on Sep 25, 2011
McDowell Hospital is now offering free running clinics to McDowell County community members in an effort to promote healthy lifestyles and the importance of routine exercise.
“We are providing this service to the community to encourage exercise as a key component to a healthy lifestyle,” said family physician Jeff Domingus, D.O. “Most of the chronic diseases that I help my patients manage on a daily basis would either be nonexistent or better controlled if physical activity were a part of their daily life. The current medical recommendation is moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, but this should just be a starting point. Making the commitment to establish a routine exercise regimen is the best decision you can make in order to prevent illnesses, feel better, and live longer.
In January 2010, McDowell Hospital launched the initial trimester of Lighten Up 4 Life, a community program designed to encourage healthy lifestyle choices and exercise through group participation. The trimesters run from January-April, May-August, and September-December.
Additionally, McDowell County hosts a one-mile Fun Run, 5k and 10k in October in conjunction with the Mountain Glory Festival, and these running clinics are designed to help people get into shape for the runs. The running clinics are held free-of-charge on Monday mornings at 6:00am at the YMCA, on Tuesday evenings at 5:00pm at the Greenway and on Wednesdays at 12noon at the Greenway.
Dr. Domingus states, “I encourage people to come out to the running clinics. We can create a training program tailored to fit your schedule and fitness level to help you meet your goals. Don’t miss the opportunity to start your journey to a healthy lifestyle with physician guidance and group support.”
